Welcome to week two of ‘THE HAIR PROJECT’. Last week I put hair pastes to the test – a product type which I’m most familiar with as it’s the product I’ve used the most over the past few years, due to being recommended by barbers in the past.
If you’re not familiar with pastes, they are essentially a thicker version of a pomade, much like a wallpaper paste.
The biggest brand difference I noticed when putting paste products to the test was consistency, which ranged from tacky to thick.
Here’s the lowdown on pastes:
Finish A defined, medium to firm hold with matt finish
Best for Any hair type, and anyone looking to achieve a messy, versatile and undone hairstyle
Tips Use sparingly – less is more when it comes to pastes
Hair paste products put to the test

First impressions, the paste was a good medium-thick texture and smelt fresh. It gave me a good definition and lasting hold. Also, a nice touch was that from certain angles you can notice a glisten of shine – due to small shimmer particles within the matt paste.

The texture felt a little bit more on the watery side and fibrous. I only required a small amount and after running through my hair, coated the ends well. I usually wear hairspray over the paste, but it wasn’t required due to the stronghold.

The texture felt tacky and I only required a small pea-sized amount. It smelt quite herbal and masculine and coated the ends well. I liked the way the product dried on the hair, leaving it looking defined without looking overloaded with product.
